Current Build

Gig racing is one of the fastest growing water sports in the Country.

Pilot Gigs have their roots in the isles of Scilly and the South West of England, they were general work boats and forerunner to the lifeboat; many are the tales of bravery and outstanding seamanship of the pilot gig crews battling to save life at sea.

As the Pilot Gigs evolved they got leaner and faster until in 1843 the William family of St Mawes Built the Gig "Treffry", a boat that is generally accepted as the best example of the gig builders art, and is today the blueprint of all modern gigs entering the sport of gig racing.

“Pilot Gig”.

Dimensions:

LOA: 32 ft
Beam: 4ft 9inches
Current Projects, are being built for Bristol Gig club and Bath Minerva rowing club.

Racing Pilot Gigs are traditionally built clinker (lapstrake) dinghies, though at 32ft in length with a 4ft 10inch beam they are quite extreme.

To qualify to race, all Pilot Gigs must conform to the design taken from the moulds of the Cornish Pilot Gig “Treffry”. The “Cornish Pilot Gig association” maintain by inspection, the standard of construction throughout the build.

To give an idea of the lightness and flexability of the build, the planking is of 5/16” Elm, the Centreline of oak or suitable hardwood, the timbers (frames) 5/8” Oak notched over the lands. All copper fastened.
